Entry into the ING NEW York City Marathon is one of the most coveted opportunities a runner can get. A few run a guaranteed entry qualifying time. Most -- about 100,000 -- try to enter via the lottery, and about 30% are successful. The rest are left with disappointment.
But there is another way, for New York City Road Runners club members. Here's the latest media release from NYCM about how NYRR members can qualify by guaranteed entry: by meeting the following criteria:
• Members must complete nine (9) qualifying NYRR races within 2008.

Can I qualify for guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon 2009?
Yes, if you joined NYRR on or before January 31, 2008, you remain a current member, and you completed nine (9) qualifying NYRR races in 2008 and will have volunteered at one race before January 31, 2009, you have met the requirements for eligibility for guaranteed entry for the ING New York City Marathon 2009.
What if I become a member after January 31?
Your membership must be current as of January 31.
If you are not currently a member, you may join now and meet the racing requirements in 2009 to become eligible for guaranteed entry in the 2010 marathon.
Which races are considered qualifiers?
All qualifying races are noted on the online and print race calendar with a Q. In general, most NYRR races (excluding cross-country races) count as qualifying races. [NYRR Race Calendar]
The requirement to volunteer is new. When did this start and why is this necessary?
The volunteer requirement was initiated in 2008 to support NYRR’s community service mission and our goal of encouraging volunteerism among our members. In addition, adding to our corps of race volunteers will help NYRR meet the NYC Parks and Recreation Department requirement to ensure a safe and cooperative race environment at the more than 50 events NYRR stages each year.
