Ironman Sweden / Kalmar Results Analysis

Jan Raphael won the inaugural Ironman Sweden/Kalmar in 8 hours, 4 minutes. If early finish times are any indicator, the course seems a fast one compared to others we rank: 43 triathletes finished in under 9 hours, and an astonishing 214 finished between 9 and 10 hours.

Significantly more remarkable, seemingly impossible, is the average finish time of all competitors: 11:23, with an unbelievable 5:34 average bike split. Either cyclists enjoyed an unprecedented 112-mile  tailwind-aided ride, or the race was nearly draft-legal, or the course was short.

Even compared to two other European 16-hour cut-off races -- France and Switzerland -- the bike split stands out as too fast to be true.
