Ironman 70.3 Oceanside California Results Analysis

Nearly 2,200 triathletes finished the 2013 Ironman 70.3 California in an average time of 6 hours and 4 minutes. The finish time is roughly consistent with an approximate 6-hour average across the 40+ Ironman 70.3 events we track. And it was nearly the same average time we observed in the 2010 running of Ironman 70.3 California.

Ironman California 70.3 has been one of the most popular North American triathlons for many years. And nearly 3,100 athletes registered to enter the race. But a staggeringly high number of entrants did not start -- DNS was 25% overall. It may be the highest DNS we've observed across the hundreds of triathlons we've analyzed over the years. Of those who started, 5% did not finish, which is fairly typical in half or full ironman triathlons.

Here are the details overall, by age group, compared with 2010, and more.

Ironman Melbourne 2013 Results Analysis

Ironman Melbourne 2013 highlights:

  • Conditions: heavy chop in the water led to a shortening of the swim to a single 1.9km loop, and high winds made for a challenging 112-mile bike ride
  • Finishers: 1,850 w/2% DNS and 5% DNF
  • Average Finish Time: 11:09 with a 1.2 mile swim, compared to 11:32 in 2012, with the complete swim
  • Swim: the revised 1.9km course led to surprisingly fast swim times, averaging 32 minutes, making it faster than 1/2 last year's 3.8km swim (2013 = 44% of 2012)
  • Bike: cyclists braved high winds on the bike course, averaging 5:54 compared to 5:43 in 2012
  • Run: on a fast marathon course, many pros broke the 3-hour marathon mark, and the field averaged 4:32, compared to 4:23 in 2012
