Ironman 70.3 World Championship 2012 Results Analysis

After battling extreme heat on the bike and run courses, 1,674 triathletes (after 17% DNS and 7% DNF) finished the 2012 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Las Vegas with an average time of 5 hours, 44 minutes. Conditions on the bike course were apparently particularly challenging, as evidenced by a relatively slow 2:57 average time, but athletes seemed to find extra energy on the run course, with an average 2:03 run split.

The 2012 Ironman Wisconsin took place under ideal conditions, and athletes turned in an average finish time of 13 hours, 14 minutes, just a couple of minutes faster than the 2009-2012 average of 3:16.  The day started with 2453 athletes (14% DNS) swimming the new 1-lap course in Lake Monona; by the time the clock reached midnight, 17 hours later, 2343 had finished the race (5% DNF).

Ironman Canada 2012 Kona Qualifying Times Analysis

Ironman Canada 2012 marked the first year that only 50 Kona Qualifying slots were offered. The number dopped from 70+ in 2009 to 65 in 2011 to 50 in 2012. Fewer qualifying slots meant faster qualifying times in most age groups, especially among the men.
